Our Mission

At GARAS (Gloucestershire Action for Refugees and Asylum Seekers) we offer support to those seeking asylum in Gloucestershire, welcoming them when they arrive, advocating for them in their daily struggles, supporting them if they face being sent back as well as helping them adjust to their long term future if they are recognised as refugees.

Staff Vacancies

Advice and Support Worker (1 Year Post)

GARAS has a 1-year post for an Advice and Support Worker. The successful applicant will offer independent, impartial and non-directive advice and information on immigration and welfare matters for refugees, asylum seekers and other migrants.  The advice offered will include general advice at IAA Level 1, such as housing, Asylum Support, benefits and health. The post holder will be working within a team.

The post is subject to an Enhanced DBS check.

Volunteer Social Media Co-ordinator

Are you creative and organised, and want to make a difference in people’s lives through the medium of social media? Do you have 2-4 hours a week that you could spend creating content for GARAS’ social media, and developing our online presence?

GARAS is looking for a volunteer who can work with staff to create, schedule and share engaging contact across our social media platforms. For more information please read through this role description. This role will be subject to a basic DBS check.

Volunteer Graphic Designer

Do you have skills and experience in branding and website support? Would you like to support GARAS by donating these skills, and one or two hours a week? We are looking for someone who has the talent and passion to help refresh our visual identity, including developing a new logo and helping to create a design for our website communications.

Volunteer ESOL Teacher in clients’ home(s)

Do you hold an English teaching qualification (TEFL, CELTA or other)? Do you have a couple of hours to spare during the daytime to visit a family’s home and teach the adults English?

We currently have 2 vacancies for someone to teach ESOL in a family’s home, one in the GL3 area and one in the GL2 area. The role will be subject to an Enhanced DBS check.

Volunteer ESOL Teacher for young people

If you enjoy working with young people, and hold an English teaching qualification (TEFL, CELTA or other), this volunteering opportunity could be for you. Every Thursday morning, GARAS runs an ESOL class for older teenagers, who may be new to the country or who may have lived here for some time. This role will be subject to an Enhanced DBS check.

Volunteer Welcomer

Are you friendly and personable, with a willingness to serve and enjoy making people feel welcome? We have opportunities for someone like you to help in our reception area: being the first GARAS face that people see as they come for advice, and ensuring that they are comfortable as they wait. You will be good at offering refreshments and keeping the waiting list in order.

Volunteer Offering Transport Support

Sometimes we have a client who needs to get to an appointment, move house, or needs transport for another reason. If you would like to help someone in this situation, have access to a vehicle, time, and a clean driving licence, we would love to hear from you.

Fundraising Sales Volunteer

If you would like to support the work of GARAS from the comfort of your own home, and can give ad hoc time during the week, why not consider joining our volunteer team as a Fundraising Sales Volunteer? This role involves selling donated items, as and when they are given to us, to help raise money for our core work.
